One of the untold storylines from this past weekend of soccer in Washington D.C. was two of Japan’s finest soccer players shared the same pitch and later took the time off the field to give back to those who came and cheered them on.
Following the game, Rapids defender Kosuke Kimura joined Washington Freedom midfielder Homare Sawa in the Champions Club at RFK Stadium for an exclusive meet-and-greet with the Embassy of Japan.
Kimura is the first and only Japanese player in MLS, while Sawa is a two-time Asian Football Confederation Player of the Year (2004, 2008), has over 140 caps with the Japanese WNT and is considered by many to be Japan’s best female player.
Prior to the Rapids taking on D.C. United, Sawa led the Freedom to a 1-0 victory over St. Louis Athletica with her 74th minute goal.
Kosuke and Homare signed autographs and took pictures with members of the Embassy and other fans in attendance…and even joined a few of them for dinner afterwards.
