Rapids High School Classic Series - Match #2 - Running Commentary

Tonight it's the second game in the Colorado Rapids High School Classic series, presented by CollegeInvest!

Tonight it's the first-ever High School Top 10 match-up hosted by the Rapids, and will feature the #1-ranked and undefeated Chatfield Chargers girls team taking on the #8-ranked and only once-beaten Pine Creek Eagles out of Colorado Springs.

Kickoff is at 7:00pm tonight and tickets are still available for the game at the box office tonight; tickets are $5 for students and $10 for adults.

We'll be here reporting here from the scoreboard master control room at Dick's Sporting Goods Park for tonight's action; check back at kickoff for running commentary!

And we are underway here at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. Three minutes in and its the Chargers with the first good chance that just hits off the top of the crossbar!

In the 8th minute of play Pine Creek works some pure magic at the top of the 18 however its great defense by Chatfield and they clear the danger. And a huge save on the rebound by Chatfield Sr. GK Alyssa Gillmore keeps us level at 0-0!

15 minutes in and its really end to end stuff here in this Girls HS Soccer top ten matchup. Neither team has broken through as of yet. Pine Creek has been applying the pressure over the last 5 minutes looking to break the deadlock. Chatfield with a quick counter however a great read by Pine Creek's GK Carmen McDermott clears any danger.

20th minute and both teams with good chances here. Only some outstanding defense by both backlines has kept this game level.

22nd minute and Pine Creek with a free kick from the top of the 18 however its JUST over the bar! This crowd of 300+ really into this match right now!

25th minute sees Chatfield with a chances but again the defense rises to the challenge for the Pine Creek Eagles who see off the danger.

30th minute and its the Eagles with a good attack down the right flank but its well cut out by Gillmore.

Approaching halftime here and its still deadlocked at 0-0. Pine Creek really trying to break that with a GREAT effort from 35 yds out that's just tipped over the bar by Gillmore. A quick counter by Chatfield results in a 1v1 chance but its rule offsides by the far side referee. And that takes us to the end of the 1st half with the score #1 Chatfield 0 #8 Pine Creek 0.

2nd half is underway. Chatfield with early pressure in 44th minute but the shot just skims past the post.

Game has really turned into a midfield battle here with neither team able to gain a foothold.

47 minutes in and we have the breakthrough. Chatfield with good pressure down the left flank and its Senior Forward Callie Hancock with the cool finish to put the Chargers up 1-0.

50th minute and Pine Creek with two good attacks down the left but Chatfield is able to clear the danger.

55th minute and Chatfield really starting to establish some good rhythm through the midfield. We would also like to thank game sponsor College Invest, who have generously donated a scholarship to each school.

58th minute and a great pass is slipped in by Pine Creek however Gillmore comes out to cut down the danger. She only just got there. A split second later and we would have been level there. Pine Creek really starting to find some rhythm now.

Chatfield almost doubles their lead in the 62nd however the effort just goes over.
Hancock almost with the brace in the 64th with her effort just turned round the post by Pine Creek keeper McDermott.

68th minute and Pine Creek with a corner kick. They have really applied the pressure here since the kick and the volley.......JUST OVER. Pine Creek just cannot get the one they need to bring us level.

Its Pine Creek again in the 70th minute with an effort by #10 Brandi Farley that just skims past the far post. Will they level here late?

Pine Creek deserves that. #4 Jenna Howerton with a shot from the top of the 18 that finds the top corner of the net. Absolutely nothing Gillmore could do on that one. We are level on terms here.

75th minute here and we are still level at 1-1. Both teams searching for what would certainly be the winner here.

76th minute and a mad scramble in the box and Pine Creek just clears. Only just. Less than 5 minutes left in regulation here. Will we go to overtime?

Chatfield desperately searching for a late winner here. Two great chances that are stifled by the Pine Creek defense.

End to end stuff here late. Both teams with good chances only to be stymied by the defense. Any goal would certainly win it here.

We are headed to overtime! Golden goal action here at Dick's Sporting Goods Park. This truly has been a match for the ages. Both teams with good chances late only to be seen off by the defense. Quick recap of your goal scorers. Hancock for Chatfield in the 47th. Howerton levels for Pine Creek in the 73rd. We are set for kickoff in overtime #1.

And its Chatfield with the first chance of overtime, but the danger is dealt with well by the Pine Creek defense. Pine Creek with a half chance but its dealt with by Chatfield.

AND THAT WAS EVER SO CLOSE!!!! Chatfield with a good effort that is just millimeters wide.

End of overtime #1 and we are still deadlocked at 1-1. A quick change over here for both teams who have really shown the pedigree tonight. Kickoff for the second overtime is just seconds away.

Straight away we have a corner kick for Chatfield and the header is CLEARED OFF THE LINE!

Chatfield really pushing for the winner here and its Hancock yet again down the left. She has really been marauding down the flank tonight and her effort is well saved by McDermott.

Pine Creek with a good effort late. Chatfield with a good effort late however both are well dealt with and we end 1-1.

Very very well played match that could have gone either way but in the end has gone neither way. Fantastic match. Absolutely fantastic.

Rapids Reserves Earn 3-1 Win Over DU

The Colorado Rapids Reserves registered a 3-1 victory over the University of Denver Tuesday afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Playing their second college team in as many weeks, the Rapids Reserve squad got a pair of goals from trialist Chris Salvaggione and a goal and an assist from Gregory Richardson to come away with the win.

In a physical match that saw DU receive two red cards, the weekday contest served as a good opportunity for many of the Rapids’ squad players to gain some valuable match play. Because of the nature of the scrimmage, the visiting club was given permission to substitute the carded players to keep a full 11-v-11 match.

Salvaggione scored the game’s opening goal in the 10th minute when he punched home a loose ball in front of the net following Nico Colaluca’s efforts to work the ball into the penalty area.

Colorado added a second goal in the 27th minute, as Ciaran O’Brien found a wide-open Gregory Richardson in the center of the box. Richardson was able to turn and find a opening to the back of the net.

The Rapids upped their lead to 3-0 in the 73rd minute, as Salvaggione tallied his second of the game. Richardson creativity dribbled his way across the left side of the pitch before feeding Salvaggione to the far post and the finish.

The Pioneers quickly responded on a free kick goal two minutes later. With the ball sitting about 18 yards from goal, Collin Audley placed a beautiful free kick shot to the left side of the goal pass a diving Steward Ceus.

Scoring
COL- Salvaggione (Colaluca) 10

Fado Irish Pub and World Soccer Daily Team Up For A Great 2 Days of Champions League Soccer!

Fado Irish Pub served as a fantastic host for the Champions League and World Soccer Daily this week! More than 100 fans turned out to participate in the radio broadcast and then stay for great food and beer while watching the Champions League matches in the afternoon.

World Soccer Daily's hosts Steve and Kenny created an incredible atmosphere leading up to kick-off each day, providing previews and commentary regarding the upcoming fixtures. Fans joined in the discussions throughout the broadcasts, offering their opinions of the highly anticipated matches.

The highlight of the two-day affair was a live appearance on air by former Manchester United player and current Colorado Rapids winger Terry Cooke. Terry fielded questions ranging from his days at Man Utd, including his experiences playing for Sir Alex Ferguson and who the best player he ever played with. Granted Terry commented that was impossible to judge given the quality of professional at Manchester United, including the likes of Ryan Giggs, David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Eric Cantona and Mark Hughes just to name a few.

Cooke also answered inquiries about his experiences here in the States playing in the MLS. The most intriguing question poised to Terry was how much the MLS has changed in his 5 year MLS career. Terry commented that the league has made amazing strides in a short time, pointing to the soccer specific stadiums, youth academies and quality of play on the field as major factors in the league reaching a similar level as the Championship, the 2nd highest division in England.

Fado Irish Pub continues to be a great partner for the Colorado Rapids and a great destination for any soccer fan. Check their website www.fadoirishpub.com/denver for upcoming soccer events and be sure to come down this Sunday at 1pm for the Official Rapids Viewing Party as your Colorado Rapids take on the Houston Dynamo. Get there early to guarantee a seat and grab a raffle ticket from the Rapids Street Team who will be giving away prizes at halftime. See you all there!

Rapids Reserves Defeat UNM 2-0

The Colorado Rapids Reserve team secured a 2-0 victory over the University of New Mexico Wednesday afternoon at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

The Lobos could not rebound after conceding two goals to the Rapids Reserve side in the first half.

The first goal of the match came in the 19th minute off a beautiful cross from Ciaran O’Brien on the right side of the pitch. After racing to stop the ball from traveling out of bounds, O’Brien quickly set up and sent the ball across the net to find trialist Ernesto Gomez. Gomez finished with a header sailing to the back of the net just past Lobos goalkeeper Victor Rodriguez.

The Rapids tallied their second goal in the 35th minute off the foot of forward Gregory Richardson. Richardson dribbled the ball down the field, eluding the defense with some fancy moves and scored beating the UNM ‘keeper to his near post.

Rapids goalkeeper Steward Ceus secured the shutout in the 87th minute blocking an aggressive shot off the right foot of Lobos defender Justin Davis.

The Rapids Reserves will play again next Tuesday, April 21 at 1:30 pm when they face the University of Denver at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park.

Slacker & Steve Get Schooled

Fans may recall that on last week's Alice 105.9fm afternoon show, hosts Slacker and Steve had a bit of fun at the expense of the Rapids and the sport of soccer.

The Rapids Undercurrent posted a recap of their show, and several Rapids fans took it upon themselves to email the jocks and give them an education about their woeful lack of knowledge about the world's most popular sport.

At the front office, plans were in the works as well. To give Slacker and Steve a true appreciation of the sport, the Rapids invited the duo to come out and take part in an official Rapids training session, and this morning the guys accepted and jumped into training with several of the Rapids players.

The first stop was heading to the Rapids locker room to get outfitted in official Rapids training gear, just like any other trialist with the team. Slacker was psyched to trade in his official Brazilian national team jersey for Rapids gear, including some stylish purple boots.

Then they headed out to the training pitch, where they took part in drills such as one-one-one (consisting of getting continually nutmegged by Nico Colaluca), shot stopping (trying to get out of the way of gleefully taken shots by the Rapids players, with various body parts coming under attack), and shooting on goalkeeper Steward Ceus (Slacker was able to finally sneak one in the back of the net after Ceus left the pitch).

Head Coach Gary Smith was left with the task of letting the guys know they wouldn't unfortunately have a future in the sport after evaluating their performance.

"It's hard to believe that not only do they not have any athletic ability, but not even any aerobic ability either," he commented.

All in all it was a good learning session for Slacker & Steve, who hopefully gained a new appreciation for the sport and the Rapids. As they said following the session, "We're sorry we ever said anything bad about soccer. You win! Rapids fans, please stop emailing us."

Slacker and Steve both fared well, and left with lovely parting gifts, including personalized home Rapids jerseys and tickets in the Rapids Supporters Section for the next home game on April 25 (note to supporters: why not extend an invitation to them to attend the pregame tailgate?).

Thanks again to Slacker & Steve for their good sportsmanship and willingness to risk life and limb by jumping into training. We're happy to report there were no (physical) injuries.

RapidsTV and AliceTV were both on site shooting video of the event; an edited recap is now up on the Alice website!

Rapids Supporters Know the Code

Thanks to members of the Rapids Supporters Clubs who volunteered their time to record an in-stadium PSA to be shown at Rapids home games.

The league's new Fan Code of Conduct was recently unveiled for this year, and pre-recorded Public Service Announcements are now required to be shown in-stadium at all home MLS matches across the league.

Colorado have the distinction of being the only club in the league to have theirs be recorded by actual fans, and not be a canned message from an announcer, staffer or other team member.

Thanks to our supporters again for volunteering their time and for their desire to be part of the process involved with the Fan Code, and look for this video to be show at all home matches.

White Lines

It was a (somewhat) historic moment in the history of Dick's Sporting Goods Park today.

Thursday, April 9, in the year 2009, marks the first time that the stadium field was lined for a sport other than soccer.

For the first time ever the award-winning stadium turf crew lined the pitch in a different fashion, this time in preparation for this Saturday's rugby tripleheader, which is being headlined by the Denver Barbarians.

Did You Know...

The only other time that happened was on May 18, 2005 when Real Salt Lake beat Chivas USA 2-0 with neither Chivas USA goalkeeper Brad Guzan or Real Salt Lake’s ’keeper D.J. Countess recording a save.

Life’s a Beach

A day following the team’s 3-2 victory over LA, the Rapids' coaches and players hit the beach for a little stretch and regeneration this afternoon.

After the team gathered for breakfast, everyone piled onto the bus and headed a few miles down the road to Redondo Beach where head athletic trainer Jaime Rojas led the group in some stretching exercises. The team, including head coach Gary Smith and assistant Steve Guppy, then took the plunge into the freezing waters of the Pacific Ocean.

With posted water temperatures of 57 degrees, the cold salt water was the perfect medicine for all the aching muscles.

The players will have the rest of the day off, but many will take advantage of their free time to scout their next regular season opponent tonight when they head back over to The Home Depot Center to watch the Columbus Crew vs. Chivas USA match at 5pm local time.

Help Give Slacker & Steve an Education

If you missed it on Wednesday, afternoon jocks Slacker & Steve of KALC Alice 105.9fm were bagging on the Rapids and soccer.

Now that's not something we take laying down; we're not afraid to call out media personalities here on the Undercurrent.

They've already gotten an earful from us, and will get an invitation soon to come down and try their skills at a team practice. But we also thought we'd throw it out to fans if they wanted to send in their comments by posting their email here on this blog.

Email Slacker & Steve directly by clicking here and let them know your thoughts.

Excerpted quotes from their show, which starts with a recap of Slacker's trip to Brazil:

Steve: "If you took a survey of the planet, I don't think soccer would be the world's most popular sport."

Slacker: "All soccer games end in penalty kicks."

Slacker: "Why does anyone give a **** about this sport?"

Steve: "It's 90 minutes of running around and nobody scores."

Steve: "The Colorado Rapids play indoor soccer, it's a little quicker than outdoor." (WHAT?!?)

Write in and let them know why it's not only the world's most popular sport, but also Colorado's!

You can listen to the archive from Wednesday (titled "Everyone Likes It but I Dont' Get It") by clicking here.

Help give our local media jocks a lesson in the world's most popular sport. Help us call them out and help hold our local media personalities accountable.

Maybe an invitation to come sit down in the Supporters Section for a game?

Pablo Helps USMNT to WCQ Win

Rapids midfielder Pablo Mastroeni started and played the full 90 in tonight's US Men's National Team win over Trinidad & Tobago in their 3-0 win in Nashville, TN.

Pablo was a steadying influence in the back and had a solid performance for the US tonight. Pablo seems to be back in Bob Bradley's good graces as the US gaffer finalizes his squad for the final push toward South Africa 2010.

Youth sensation Jozy Altidore provided the goals, with a hat trick on the evening.

In other news regarding the match, here's a public service announcement for all soccer fans watching ESPN broadcasts: can someone please get John Harkes hooked on phonics?

You'd think a former captain of the US Men's National Team could learn how to pronounce another fellow USMNT captain's name correctly. It's not like Pablo's a rookie on the squad.

Harkes: it's Mastroeni. Sound it out. We are sure it's even printed phoenetically in your pre-broadcast prep materials' pronounciation guide ("MOSS-stroh-EN-EE"). The sound "My-STREE-On-EE" does not exist, so please get it right for future broadcasts. Fans of the Rapids and the USA want to hear Pablo's name said right. Thanks.
